El siglo XX y hoyThe twentieth century and today
1900 – hoy1900 – today
Two world wars, the most powerful science in history and a discipline split into traditions that barely read each other.
There is no longer one philosophy. There are conversations that scarcely hear one another.
1900: dos comienzos1900: two beginnings
In Germany, Edmund Husserl publishes the Logical Investigations and founds phenomenology: describing experience as it is given. In Cambridge, Bertrand Russell and G. E. Moore rebel against the idealism inherited from Hegel and, with Gottlob Frege's logical tools, launch analytic philosophy: clarifying problems by analysing the language in which they are posed.
The two beginnings soon part. Nazism scatters the German-speaking philosophers: some die, others emigrate to the United States and England and change the discipline there. After Auschwitz and Hiroshima, the Enlightenment confidence that knowing more makes us better is in question.
The early Wittgenstein and the Vienna Circle believe many philosophical problems are tangles of language that logic dissolves. The later Wittgenstein, and then Austin, look at how we actually use words. Quine erases the border between philosophy and science. In 1971 Rawls brings justice back to the centre.
Fenomenología y existenciaPhenomenology and existence
Heidegger turns the description of experience into a question about the being of whoever lives it: an entity thrown into the world, who knows it will die. Sartre draws from this an ethics of freedom without excuses. Simone de Beauvoir shows that this freedom is lived from within a situation. Hannah Arendt thinks political action and totalitarianism.
Feminismo y pensamiento poscolonial preguntan quién quedó fuera del «nosotros».The Frankfurt School asks how technical reason became an instrument of domination. Structuralism displaces the subject: language and systems speak us. Foucault studies how knowledge and power manufacture the madman, the prisoner, the normal. Feminism and postcolonial thought ask who had been left out of the “we”.
Two traditions are born together, drift apart for half a century and cross again. Between them, more bridges than is usually told.

In a Swiss hotel Ernst Cassirer, heir to Kant and the Enlightenment, debates Martin Heidegger, who has just published Being and Time. The students feel the younger man has won. Four years later Cassirer is in exile and Heidegger is a Nazi rector.
Cambridge, 25 October 1946. Karl Popper gives a talk arguing that there are genuine philosophical problems. Wittgenstein, who denies it, gestures with the fireplace poker and walks out. It lasted ten minutes and the witnesses never agreed on what happened.

Hannah Arendt covers for a magazine the trial of Adolf Eichmann, organiser of the deportations. She expected a monster and finds a clerk who speaks in stock phrases. She calls it “the banality of evil”: immense harm can be done without thinking.

In Kyoto, Nishida Kitarō publishes An Inquiry into the Good in 1911 and founds a school that crosses Zen with German philosophy. Frantz Fanon, a psychiatrist from Martinique, analyses in 1952 what racism does to its victim from the inside. In Africa, Paulin Hountondji argues in 1976 over whether calling traditional worldviews “philosophy” recognises them or confines them.
In Latin America, Enrique Dussel and others have proposed since the 1970s a philosophy of liberation that thinks from the periphery. And sumak kawsay or suma qamaña, the Andean “good living”, enters as a principle in the constitutions of Ecuador (2008) and Bolivia (2009).
Analítica y continental no son geografíaAnalytic and continental are not geography
Frege, Wittgenstein and Carnap, founders of the analytic tradition, were German and Austrian. The difference is one of style and of what is taken as a model: science and logic, or history and literature.
Posmoderno no es «todo vale»Postmodern does not mean “anything goes”
Lyotard spoke in 1979 of incredulity towards grand narratives, and Foucault showed that truths have a history. Neither concluded that it makes no difference what one asserts.
La filosofía no murióPhilosophy did not die
Its end was announced several times over the century. Meanwhile applied ethics, political philosophy and the philosophy of mind were reborn, driven by medicine, inequality and machines.
No se nace mujer: se llega a serlo. One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman.
It opens the second volume of the work. Beauvoir applies the existentialist thesis that there is no prior essence, and adds what Sartre had neglected: no one makes themselves from scratch. What a society means by “woman” is a situation built by upbringing, economics and myths, and that is why it can change.

El pensador y el carnéThe thinker and the party card
Heidegger, for many the most influential philosopher of the century, joined the Nazi party in 1933 and never apologised. His notebooks, published in 2014, contain antisemitic passages. Whether the work can be separated from the author is still debated. The question applies to every age in this series.

Las preguntas que te tocanThe questions that fall to you
What we owe to those not yet born, on a warming planet. Whether a machine that converses understands what it says. What a person is when a genome can be edited. How to decide among people who do not share even the facts. No one has answered them yet.
